Louis usually signed and dated paintings only when they were released for exhibition and/or sale. His dating often reflects this release rather than the date of the picture’s execution. Stylistic evidence makes it highly likely that this painting was made in 1961, although it was signed and dated when first released for exhibition in 1962.
