Although it was dated “52” on the stretcher, this painting so closely resembles the first (stained) paint layer of Landscape (Mid-day) (cat. no. 50) and Dark Thrust (cat. no. 49) that it seems logical to assume that it was painted at the same time. All three pictures were probably painted in the spring of 1953, after Louis and Kenneth Noland had seen Helen Frankenthaler’s painting Mountains and Sea during their trip to New York. Following that visit, both Louis and Noland experimented with new techniques, which may account for the designation #13 Experiment inscribed on the stretcher of this canvas.
