Green crayon markings made by Louis at the bottom edge indicate that he once considered cutting the canvas so as to make two paintings. For this reason, the picture was assigned estate inventory numbers 1-46 and 1-46A. The unpainted margin between the group of stripes on the left and those on the right was not wide enough, however, to permit the stretching of two separate paintings.
