The unstretched canvas bore the following inscription: “1 in. of white on each side or per Clem[ent Greenberg].” This notation indicates the artist’s intention to frame the painted image with a narrow unpainted margin as well as his willingness to defer to Greenberg’s decision in matters of cropping.
